Sean McMillin has been playing bass for 16 years, most of the time professionally ("Payment by beer counts, right?"). He has played in funk, rock, blues, and acid jazz/fusion bands, primarily in the Sacramento, California area. A long-time wanna-be drummer who grew up air-drumming to Rush and Led Zeppelin, he was inspired to take up the bass after taking a music theory class for general ed in college. Figuring that bass was the link between percussion and harmony, he hooked up with an incredible teacher in the San Luis Obispo area (Chris Robertson) and started practicing and jamming with others every chance he got. To this day he is still exploring that link between percussion and harmony. Melodic and grooving jazz fusion, especially acid jazz, which incorporates the raw elements of funk and hip-hop with the harmonies of jazz, is his true love -- though he will always enjoy rocking out every chance he gets.
"The first time I ever played on stage was a club called the Dark Room in San Luis Obispo. I'd been playing for about 6 months, and was in a trio playing original rock tunes. We got up and did three of our songs to a mildly curious audience, during a set break for the real band that was there. Afterward, some guy at the bar came over grinning and slapped me on the back, and said, 'Man, you got some SERIOUS balls!!' ...I think that inspirational moment has stayed with me ever since."
